3 Easy Ways to Find Hidden Water Leaks in Your Home

Plumbing repairs and inspections are often expensive and time-consuming. However, it is an expense that can be avoided by finding the leaks before they cause too much damage to your home.

Here are three ways to find hidden water leaks in your home that will save you time and money.

1) Check Your Water Meter for Leaks

The first way to check for leaks is by checking your water meter. Most meters have a small dial which you can turn with your hand. Start by shutting off all of the faucets inside your home.

Turn on any outside spigots or hoses that could be leaking water into the ground. Head over to the water meter and check for any changes.  If your water meter  has moved more than a 1/4 turn in either direction, you may have a problem.

2) Check Your Faucet for Leaks

Another way to check for water leaks is by checking your faucets and pipes. If you notice any moisture or wetness around your faucets, this could mean you are losing water somewhere.

The same goes for any leaks that appear on the outside of pipes or hoses connected to your home. You can also try taking off the washer at one of your faucets and looking inside if there is any dirty buildup which would indicate that it has been leaking behind the wall.

3) Pay Close Attention to Your Water Bill

One of the most straightforward ways to figure out if you’re losing any water is by looking at your monthly water bill. If your family’s water usage has increased recently, then there could be a problem that needs immediate attention.

While it may be normal for your water and electricity bills to increase during certain times of the year, such as wintertime or summer vacation, you should take note if the increase seems drastic and/or it continues over multiple months.
